Church of Saints Tiburzio and Susanna

Badia Agnano

TYPOLOGY: architectural
PERIOD: medieval
DATE: XII-XIII century
DEFINITION: church
DESCRIPTION: The building is the best preserved testimony of the ancient monastic complex of Santa Maria ad Agnano. The church has an east-west orientation with a Latin cross plan with a single nave and a semicircular apse in the presbytery area, as well as two small apses in the lateral transepts. Internally the structure is in excellent state of conservation, with wall facings composed of perfectly squared stone ashlars placed on horizontal rows. The large single-lancet window located in the central apse is the result of a subsequent building project. The church represents one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque in the area. The current building can be dated, for its architectural and construction characteristics between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
